EI is the ability to be smart about our as well as others’ feelings It involves being able to notice, understand and act on emotions in an effective way Children with higher emotional intelligence are able to pay more attention, have more positive relationships, and are more empathic. The psychologist Daniel Goleman, author of – “Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ., has described EI as having five basic parts.
- Self-awareness: What you are feeling at a particular time and understanding how your mood can impact others.
- Self-regulation: You control your response to emotions and consider possible consequences before acting on impulse.
- Motivation: You accomplish goals in spite of negative or distracting feelings you may be having.
- Empathy: When you can understand how others feel.
- Social skills: When you can manage relationships. You know what kind of behaviors get a positive response from others.
